Community Update on Puna Boat Ramp

Possible Plans and Options

  • Date: 07/13/2019 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
  • Location: Sacred Heart Church
    15-3003 Pāhoa Village Rd.
    Pāhoa , Hawaii 96778
  • Introduction: Save the Date - July 13th - for a Community Update with Rep. Joy San Buenaventura on possible plans and options to restore the Puna Boat Ramp

The 2018 Kīlauea lava flow closed the only boat ramp in the Puna District. The lack of boat access has left many Puna fisherman in financial ruin. The boat ramp supplied our island with the second-largest catch of fish and provided economic benefits in a district where commercial opportunities are limited. The closure of the Pohoiki boat ramp resulted in an increase in the price of fresh fish across the state and put countless local fishermen out of work. For many of our Puna fishermen, the boat ramp closure eliminated both their income and a source of sustenance that fed their families for generations. The boat ramp closure also affected those working in the lava tour boat industry.

Given the economic, cultural, and recreational importance of restoring facilities that provide boaters access to the ocean, Rep. Joy San Buenaventura organized an informational meeting for the community to learn about possible plans for a new Puna boat ramp. Highlighting this meeting will be a presentation by Department of Land & Natural Resources Deputy Director, Robert "Bob" Matsuda.
